Food for Thought Cafe – in the new Library!

Is all that studying and hard work making you hungry? Need some caffeine? If you are in ECC’s new Academic Library and Learning Center then you are in luck! Food for Thought Cafe is located on the first floor. Food for Thought sells coffee drinks and other beverages and a variety of pastries and other snacks. There is also a nice seating area where you an enjoy your purchases.

Hours are:
Monday – Thursday: 8:00 am – 7:00 pm
Friday: 8:00 am – 1:00 pm

Study Rooms in the New Library

You asked for it, you got it! Your new Academic Library and Learning Center has several study rooms for student use. Some of the rooms are equipped with computer screens (simply hook your laptop to it with cords available at the circulation desk) and some with whiteboards.

To use the rooms, come to the Library’s Circulation Desk and check on availability.

What to do without Wikipedia!

Wikipedia has shut down for 24 hours in protest to pending legislation. Where will you go for information?

Fortunately, you are reading the Elgin Community College Library’s blog and we are here to help. We subscribe to some online, academic alternatives to Wikipedia. They are still available today, and always! And, they are sources that your instructors will approve of and will allow you to use in your research. They are:

Credo Reference – an online collection of academic encyclopedias
Encyclopedia Britannica

Today we open the doors to the new Academic Library and Learning Center! We will be writing about some of the new features to our great new building in the upcoming days.

Your new library has almost twice as many computers as the old library. In our new facility, we have almost 80 computers for your use.

Library Open Until Midnight!

ECC Library will remain open until midnight on Monday, December 12th!

And while you are pulling that late night study session or finishing up that research paper, be sure to take a break and enjoy a pancake breakfast at 10pm in the Community Room courtesy of the Division of Teaching, Learning and Student Development! Also enjoy a free massage from the ECC massage program!

We’re Moving!

ECC Library is moving into our new location which will be called the Academic Library and Learning Center (also known as building C) over the holiday break. Distance Learning, Tutoring, and the Center for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) will also be housed in the new library location.

In order to accommodate the move, ECC Library will close on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 5:00 pm and will reopen at 7:45 am on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 for the start of spring semester classes in our new location.

If you would like to return materials during our closing, you may return them to the new library book drop located to left of the main entrance directly across from the new Health & Life Sciences Building. The book drop will be open starting Dec. 15th. You can also always drop materials off at the library book drop outside of the Visual and Performing Arts Center which is current open and will remain open throughout the holiday break.

If you have questions about returning materials or paying fines before the holiday break, please contact the Library Circulation Desk at (847) 214-7337. You can also check back here for news and updates concerning the status of our move to our new location.

Be sure to take care of fines early this semester!

In case you haven’t heard the news, ECC Library is moving to a brand new building between semesters. We will open in our new building on Jan. 17, 2012.

Because of our move, we are encouraging students to return materials and take care of fine payments before the ECC Library closes on Dec. 15, 2011. By taking care of any fines you have ahead of time, you will not be blocked from registering for your Spring classes.

In order to take care of any fines you have, be sure to return overdue material to the library. All overdue materials must be returned in order to have fines assessed.

If you wish to return materials while the library is closed between Dec. 15, 2011 and Jan. 17, 2012, you may do so at the book drop located outside VPAC. However, no fines can be paid during this time frame.

If you have any questions about materials you’ve checked out or about paying fines, please contact the library circulation desk at 847-214-7337.

OVID Nursing Journals for Community Colleges

ECC Library has a new database for journals in the subject of nursing. OVID Nursing Journals features access to more than 40 full text professional journals. To search the journals, click on the “Elgin Community College Journals @ Ovid” link. To search for a specific journal to see if it is available through Ovid, use our EBSCO A to Z search tool.

Congratulations to ECC Library’s very own student worker Jeff Johnson who just received an ECCFA scholarship for his continued studies at NIU. Jeff will not only be graduating tomorrow, but he will also be delivering a graduation speech.

New Databases: NewsBank and Nature

ECC Library has added two new databases this semester: NewsBank and Nature.

NewsBank is now your go-to source for the Chicago Tribune. You can even access articles from today’s edition! ECC Library patrons now have access valuable local and national information from the Chicago Tribune through this database instead of ProQuest. Patrons can still use ProQuest to access other newspapers (such as The New York Times and Wallstreet Journal) as well as scholarly journals, magazines, and trade publications.

Our other new database is Nature. This database allows ECC patrons electronic access to articles published within the last 4 years of the weekly science journal Nature. Keep up with the lastest in scientific research!

Login for both these databases is required when accessing them from off-campus. Contact the ECC Library for more information on registering your bardcode with the library.
